UT Martin's Outstanding Young Alumni Award Recipient

39 News got an exclusive interview from Crystal Hayslett. Better known as Fatima from her character on Tyler Perry’s bet series “Sista’s”. She’s an alumnus of UT Martin and will be the recipient of this year’s outstanding young alumni award.

She shares her journey from a student here at UT Martin to on the hit series “Sista’s”

Hayslett is member of the 2006 graduating class. Her involvement while on campus encouraged her to initially pursue a career in politics. Crystal Hayslett (actress) stated, “I moved to Washington DC after school. I finished my last semester online in DC. From there I decided I didn’t want to work in politics. I spent two in a half years there and decided this isn’t what I want to do. I’m not living my passion. So, I ended up moving to Atlanta to pursue acting and music.”

Shortly after moving to Atlanta, she began working for Tyler Perry studios as a production’s assistant, over the years she climbed the ranks and began working in custom design, then as Tyler Perry’s personal stylist. Hayslett recalls the day she decided to ask for what she truly desired. Crystal Hayslett (actress) Informed us, “the farewell Madea tour. He was backstage full Madea. And I told him i wanted to ask something are you busy. I went on to ask t i really want to act.”

Because of her leap of faith, Haysletts dreams became her reality. Current students at her alma mater were proud to hear her success story.

Kiyah Douglas (student) stated, “She was very inspiring. To see someone, get such a beautiful award. She’s a great actress, and I love the show.”

The students wanted to leave her with one last message.

Ta’nya Dean, Ta’kyla Dean, and Kiyah Douglas (students) stated, “congratulations crystal! We are so excited for you to get the award during homecoming.”
