Tennessee Secretary of State, Tre Hargett, speaks at Jackson Rotary Club luncheon
JACKSON, Tenn. (WNBJ) - The Jackson Rotary Club hosted its weekly luncheon today at the First Methodist Church. The keynote speaker for this event was the Tennessee Secretary of State, Tre Hargett.
“Well, we are going to talk about why your vote matters, we are going to talk about the things we are doing to protect the integrity of Tennessee's elections and at the same time make it easier than ever to vote in the state of Tennessee,” said Tre Hargett, the Tennessee Secretary of State.
Tre Hargett, the Tennessee Secretary of State, spoke at the Jackson Rotary Club luncheon to stress the importance of voting since early voting is underway for the May primary.
“The biggest issue is that we want people to go vote because these are the people who have control of your taxes, sanitation, and your schools. There are many different issues that are impacted by who you vote for in these elections. When you don’t go vote, what you’ve done is given up your voice to those that do,” said Secretary Hargett.
The secretary of state also wanted to make voters aware of some issues going on during this primary election.
“One of the things we have been hearing about is crossover voting. People need to understand when you go vote in a primary, you are supposed to vote in the primary in which you are a member of the party. You’re supposed to stick to your own lane and make sure you vote in your primary and actually, that’s Tennessee law. The DA could actually prosecute that if people are willingly going in and voting in the other party,” said Secretary Hargett.
The president of the Jackson Rotary Club explains why is it important to hear from our state leaders.
“The secretary of state is heavily involved with our election process and with us being in early voting and some very impactful elections going on as we speak, it’s nice to get an update and be kept up to speed on what’s going on with that,” said Russ McKelvey, the President of the Jackson Rotary Club.
The Rotary Club is a civic organization that meets every Wednesday at noon at the First Methodist Church in downtown Jackson.
Next Wednesday's meeting will feature keynote speaker Dr. Samuel Oliver, the President of Union University.
