Severe weather predicted for West Tennessee

JACKSON, TN (WNBJ) - Severe weather is predicted to take effect tonight. Weather experts weigh in on how the public should prepare for the possibility of dangerous weather.

“So right now, they have got it rated about a three out of five chances for damaging winds. That is going to include very high winds and very possible for tornados tonight,” said Jason Moore, the city of Jackson and Madison Co. Emergency Management Director.

Emergency management went on the say that they will activate their storms shelters if a tornado watch is issued.

The Madison County Fire Department emphasizes the importance of getting prepared beforehand.

“Prepare ahead and plan early. Make sure you have your flashlight, make sure the batteries are in there. Now is the time to make sure your weather radio is working. Make sure your phone is fully charged before the evening. Have that safe place to go to and hopefully that is already established. Make sure it is pillows and blankets in there,” said

Eric Turner, the Fire Chief with Madison County Fire Department.

The National Weather Service in Memphis is tracking the storm and says west Tennessee ranks highest in nocturnal tornado fatalities.

“Quite a few people are in this moderate risk and the enhanced risk pretty much includes our entire area. So, I would say at least two and half million people will see thunderstorms tonight and a potential for some severe ones," said Andy Chiuppi, the General Forecaster at NWS Memphis.
