MyRide West TN is searching for new drivers in Hardin County
JACKSON, TN (WNBJ) - Are you looking for reliable transportation options for older adults in your area?
Well, listen up! The MyRide West Tennessee is a free service that will provide just that.
The MyRide program is looking to expand its service area in west Tennessee. The project is now searching for new drivers for Hardin County residents.
MyRide is a volunteer assisted, transportation service for adults 60 years and older, who are no longer able to drive.
“So, with MyRide, we are more than just a ride, we build friendships with our riders. We help them connect with the community. Our riders are people who just for a medical reason cannot drive,” said Keita Cole, the MyRide Director at MyRide West TN.
This program is funded through a grant awarded by the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability.
Volunteer drivers are always needed.
Drivers are required to have a working car, attend training, the ability to pass a background check, and be able to dedicate at least 3 hours a month to work.
“To be able to launch in Hardin County we have to have at least ten. I think we have four right now, so we need six more at least to get it going. The more volunteers we have the more older adults we can assist,” said Cole.
One rider who uses the service explains why the program is so vital in her life.
“I have what is called Retinitis Pigmentosa, it’s a degenerative disease of your eyes, your retina. It disabled me from driving a car about six years ago. So, for two years, I foundered a little bit. I lost my independence. People don’t realize how much independence your vehicle gives you,” said Sheila Burch, a rider with MyRide.
Burch says, in her case, this program is a life-saver.
“In my opinion, it saved my life in a lot of ways. I was very depressed. I always had a really active social life. To sit home on the couch for two years, was really hard on me. In saving my life, I know that it has blessed some other people too because I know God honors what people do to help others,” said Burch.
