More Than One Hundred West Tennessee Students Attend Youth Summit
JACKSON, Tenn. - African American high school students throughout West Tennessee had the opportunity to learn about the resources and opportunities available to them.
104 students represented fourteen counties and seventeen school districts.
Some of those students represented Madison County schools.
“It gives me new chances to explore new ideas. So, like I said earlier to branch out, so like if one thing didn’t work… like neuroscience didn’t work I could become a public speaker… or I could be like you, in your stance one day.”
Victoria Haywood is a sophomore at Madison Academic high school.
Her plans after high school are to go to Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida to study psychology and neuroscience.
She is excited to learn about the different opportunities available for her after high school.
“It’s helping me formulate new plans and different things, like plan A, B, and C, and that’s what I like, that’s what I look forward to.”
The University of Tennessee at Martin WestStar program reports the Youth Leadership Summit is designed to give students the opportunity to learn from career professionals and keynote speakers.
A career professional from the automotive assembly complex, Blue Oval City, spoke to students about what opportunities they have there.
“I really believe that the children that are here today, they’re going to be graduating when our plants open, they’re the future of our region.”
Sheronda Green with Blue Oval City wants to inform students about the mega manufacturing campus coming to West Tennessee.
Blue Oval City will be operated by Ford Motor company and SK Innovation and is expected to open in 2025.
“You know of course, resources in terms of education, jobs, and just being part of a historic project right in the region where they were born, and they live and are being educated.”
