MCFD prepares for Annual Firefighters Freedom Festival
JACKSON, TN (WNBJ) - This Sunday, the Madison County Fire Department will host the 7th Annual Firefighters Freedom Festival.
The festival is a free family-friendly event held at the McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport. The event will include musical performances, carnival rides, 12 food vendors, and a fireworks show.
The festival starts at 3 p.m. and the fireworks show begins at dusk.
The department is excited about hosting the event again to provide a fun-filled day to celebrate the holiday.
“The Firefighters Freedom Fest was created to increase awareness of the dangers of using consumer-grade fireworks. So, this will be an opportunity for people to come out and see a professional show. That is done here in-house. We got firefighters that are trained and certified to shoot fireworks on their own, so we encourage the public to come out here,” said Anna Kate Craig, the Community Risk Reduction Coordinator with the Madison Co. Fire Department.
The Madison County Fire Department also wants to remind residents in the county that shooting their own personal fireworks is illegal.
The department gives a few tips to people who buy sparkers as a substitute to celebrate the holiday:
Firework Safety
Fireworks are illegal in Madison County
Keep kids away from fireworks and sparklers
Sparklers burn at 1200 degrees Fahrenheit so they can cause third-degree burns
Never mix alcohol with fireworks
Never light more than one firework or sparkler at a time
