Made in Tennessee with Famous Soul Food
For over thirty years, Mary Henderson worked industry, and one day she decided to go into business for herself by opening a restaurant in Humboldt.
Right outside of downtown on Mainstreet sits a small white building. Less than a month ago, that building was transformed into a soul food spot by a woman who loves to cook and serve others.
“I love catering, I people, and I love being a servant to others,” said Henderson.
Henderson calls her restaurant famous soul food. She says after doing some prayer and research, she came up with the name.
“And I wanted to bring something different to Humboldt Tennessee, where alot of southern people enjoy soul food, and so I prayed about it, and that’s what came to my mind.”
The building’s renovations began in November of 2020, and after passing the health inspection with a score of 99, famous soul food opened with a ribbon-cutting on December 16.
“The ribbon-cutting was really, really good. The chamber of commerce supported me well,” said Henderson.
Customers and guests who stop by can find turnip greens, hot water cornbread, a shrimp boil, and fried chicken.
“Our Fried chicken is cooked fresh. We don’t cook it until the customer sits down and orders it. our food from vegetables is fresh; we don’t do a lot of canned foods.”
Before becoming a business owner, the native of Boliver worked as a dietary manager and a food caterer. She says it feels great to be her boss.
“I’m just happy to be here, and I am very thankful to God for allowing me to have my dream, to live my vision, and to let it come true. To be my own boss,” said Henderson.
Famous Soul Food is open Thursdays-Sundays from 11 am-6 pm.
