Made in Tennessee: Peppermint Pony
HUMBOLDT, TN (WNBJ) - Our Made in Tennessee this week spotlights Peppermint Pony in Humboldt. They make handmade children’s clothing unique for every customer.
“It is not like everyone has one like it because they are custom made and they are made with love. We enjoy everything we do here,” said Brenda Ward, the owner of Peppermint Pony.
Ward says the business had humble beginnings and quickly grew in popularity.
“Well, it started in 1993. This lady and I were really close friends, family members. She was like a second mom to me. They started working around her kitchen table,” said Ward.
Ward says she bought the store in 2003 after the original owner passed away.
They create clothes for newborns to a child size 16 and you have the ability to make your clothing one of a kind.
“You can design it. You can pick out your style. You can just take a piece of fabric and make it into any kind of garment you want,” said Ward.
Peppermint Pony had to shift gears during the height of the COVID pandemic.
They pitched in to help those in the medical field by making masks for the staff at Jackson-Madison General Hospital.
“We went to doing 16-hour shifts, 7 days a week just to supply the gowns and stuff for the local hospital for their employees to have protection,” said Ward.
Ward say she lost her husband to COVID and now her granddaughter helps at the shop.
“She has been such an inspiration to me these past years. It touches my heart because it is something we can do together. It’s always been something we can do together, and I am just happy I can help her do whatever she needs to take some load off of her because it has been tough the last couple of years,” said Alyssa Allen, Ward's granddaughter, who works in the store.
Peppermint Pony is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They also ship purchases all around the country and internationally as well.
