Local agency packs Thanksgiving meals for seniors

BRADFORD, TN (WNBJ) - With Thanksgiving being tomorrow, volunteers from the Gibson County Office on Aging are preparing Thanksgiving meals for seniors in the community.

“We want to let them know that they are very special to our hearts and that we love them very much,” said Pam Dethloff, the Director at the Gibson Co. Office on Aging.

Volunteers will be preparing 270 thanksgiving meals for the elderly as a part of the Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels Project Care.

“This is such a blessing for us to be able to provide this meal for home-bound senior citizens. Last year due to COVID we were unable to provide that meal for them. There are a lot of seniors that are alone for Thanksgiving that will not be able to spend time with their family and they are not able to cook this traditional Thanksgiving meal,” said Dethloff.

Nearly 20 volunteers showed up to start packing the meals to be delivered on Thanksgiving morning.

One long-time volunteer was excited to be able to serve her community in this way.

“Oh, it’s wonderful! I meant you wouldn’t believe how humble everybody is. If you get to go in the homes and they will tell you, please don’t leave. You’re the only person I get to see today, and it really makes your heart feel wonderful whenever you can help,” said Charlotte Burkett, a volunteer.

A first-time volunteer says it is heartwarming to be able to provide meals to those in need.

“It really does touch your heart. It gave me an opportunity to help them out today and it made it a joy for them. I am sure it is a great joy to the people receiving this," said Doris Holt, a volunteer.

Thanksgiving cards from the Bradford Elementary students will be included with the meals to bright the seniors’ day.

All thanksgiving meals will be delivered tomorrow morning.
