Jackson hazardous waste collection day set for Saturday (10/21)


JACKSON, TN (WNBJ)-

The city of Jackson’s household hazardous waste collection day will be this Saturday

Residents will have the chance to get rid of harmful waste from around their homes the right way and without harming the environment

“This year along with the hazardous waste we’re also collecting electronics and then we’ve added some more sponsors. Direct shred will be doing document shredding. We’ll be collecting cardboard; omega recycling will be doing out electronics and we’ve added prescription medicine drop off the Madison county narcotics division is doing that,” says Wendy Braxten-Rhyne the Storm Water Program Manager.

The collection times are 9 am to 1 pm this Saturday at 164 Conalco drive

Items OK to Bring:

From the workbench

  • Oil-based paint, thinner and stripper

  • Adhesives, driveway sealants, roofing tar and other home improvement products

  • Starter fluid

  • Wallpaper remover

  • (Latex paint will not be accepted; instead, small amounts of latex paint can be dried until solid and thrown away in the regular garbage.)

From the garage

  • Gasoline, antifreeze, coolants

  • Fuel and oil additives

  • Grease and rust solvents

  • Naval jelly and body putty

  • Carburetor and fuel injector cleaners

  • Non-alkaline batteries

  • Car wax and polishes

  • Used oil: Many places in Jackson accept used oil year round.

From the yard

  • Herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and fertilizers

  • Wood preservatives

  • Pool chemicals

From the house

  • Household cleaners, such as drain and oven cleaners, polishes and disinfectants

  • Computers, computer parts, and other electronic waste (no televisions)

  • Fluorescent light bulbs and tubes

  • Medicines/drugs

A few more items

  • Needles and sharps (Place them in puncture-proof containers)

  • Photo processing chemicals

  • Aerosols and compressed gas

  • Mercury thermostats and thermometers

  • 10 box maximum per vehicle

Electronic Recycling

Accepted Items: Computer equipment and components (PCs, CPUs, mice, monitors, keyboards, printers, scanners, laptops, modems, hard drives, memory, circuit boards, speakers, power cords, cables, etc.)

Other Electronic Items: (VCRs, DVD players, game systems, radio/CD players, MP3 players, PDAs/cradles, fax machines, scanners, cell phones/ cordless phones & chargers, and other electronic equipment). Not accepted: Televisions, microwaves, large appliances.

Prescription Medication Disposal

  • Keep medication in original container, if possible.

  • Will accept prescription medications and all over-the-counter medications.

  • Will not accept needles and liquid medications.

Cardboard Recycling

  • Boxes must be broken down before drop-off.

DO NOT BRING

  • Latex paint: Small amounts of latex paint can be dried until solid and thrown away in the regular garbage.

  • Used oil: Many places in Jackson accept used oil year-round.

  • Televisions

  • Alkaline batteries: They can be thrown in the regular trash.

  • Radioactive, medical, or infectious waste

  • Smoke detectors or empty containers

  • Ammunition or explosives

  • Waste from commercial businesses without an appointment

Remember to keep waste in original containers and do not mix chemicals.
