Jackson community reacts to the Supreme Court's reversal of Roe V. Wade
JACKSON, TENN (WNBJ)-
After today’s supreme court decision to overturn Roe V. Wade abortion will be almost completely illegal in Tennessee because of the state's trigger law.
The 2019 "Human Life Protection Act," makes it a Class C felony to perform an abortion, If convicted they would face three to 15 years in prison.
The law makes one exception- when an abortion is necessary to prevent death or "substantial and irreversible impairment of major bodily function."
Tennessee is one of thirteen states with trigger laws. In 30 days abortion will be illegal in Tennessee.
But the state has now filed an emergency motion to allow the state to abandon the 30-day wait to enact its trigger law.
“When I heard the news, I screamed for joy. We are so excited that life will be protected,” said Birth Choices Tiffany Dawson.
One Jackson resident felt differently "well, it kind of shocked me because roe versus wade has been there ever since I've been here.”
She said she feels like the Supreme Court is taking people's rights away, "I'm not for abortion, but I'm not it's not I don't think it's right that the courts can step in and tell a woman what to do with their body… what are they going to do next? Take away our right to vote?"
Many will be looking for aid now that they will not be able to get an abortion in Tennessee- Birth Choice in Jackson says they are ready to be busier than ever, "People will still have unplanned pregnancies. Women will still be in difficult circumstances. So there will be a lot of needs that need to be covered. And that's why we're here still. We're still going to be open,” said Dawson.
Now that abortions will be illegal in Tennessee Birth Choice is looking to help mothers provide for their children in and out of the womb, “We hope that they turn to us and get resources like our parenting program that we give material resources. Through that program. They earn mommy money and they can get clothes, diapers, formula equipment, baby beds, and amazing things. Like that… we also refer for adoptions. That is something we always educate people on adoptions, let them know that that is an option that they have for their pregnancy," Dawson said.
