Hunters in Jackson excited about deer season starting this Saturday

JACKSON, TN (WNBJ) - Tennessee’s deer season opens this Saturday and some hunters in the hub city are excited about opening day.

“Oh, God I’m always excited every year I live for hunting,” said Kris Potter, a Georgia resident.

Kris Potter has been hunting since she was a little girl and looks forward to the season every year.

“I get excited about the sportsmanship of it. I have older children, who I continue to hunt with and pass on the tradition because it is really important to pass it down to your kids. Not only teach them about hunting but survivor skills. And, just getting out and enjoying the outdoors,” said Potter.

The store director at Academy Sports and Outdoors has seen an increase in hunters shopping in the store.

“Well, you know we had this pandemic thing happen and a lot of people took up hunting last year that ordinarily was not hunting so last year was a big spike and it continues this year,” said Steve Johnson, the Store Director at Academy Sports & Outdoors.

A newcomer to the sport says she started hunting recently and talks about what she enjoys most about it.

“The peace and quiet, being able to sit there in the quiet and look at the natural,” said Ashlee McAlpin, a Bolivar resident.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency wants to remind hunters of a few safety tips while hunting.

“We ask for everyone to wear your orange, remember your safe gun handling, and to wear a safety harness if they are hunting from a tree stump,” said Amy Snider-Spencer, the Region 1 Communications and Outreach with Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

Deer season lasts until January 2nd, 2022.
