Get Your Summer Garden Started West Tennessee

JACKSON, Tn.- More and more people in West Tennessee are looking to start growing their own food. If you have been thinking about starting your own garden with flowers or food, we have some tips from the experts!

“I know a lot of our customers now are growing their gardens, like in pots or in the phrase being, you know, you don't have to have a big area to have a garden. i think it's good for anybody to always, you know, learn how to raise tomatoes or peppers or they know where their stuff comes from because. Agriculture is a part of our everyday life,” said Ginger Kemp owner of R&J Feed.

Ginger tells 39 News that there is no one way to create a garden. But it is important to understand the soil type you are using.

“So, you can do it organic, or you can use regular fertilizer, whatever you prefer. The big thing is just having fun and just being able to dig in the dirt and enjoy being outside.”

One shopper at R&J feed has been gardening for over 20 years and he shares why he made this specific plant purchase.

“I picked up Marigolds because I think I have a problem with pollinators in my garden. I'm not seeing the bees and so you have to have the bees in order for the plants to pollinate to produce fruit. I don't see them. So I bought the Marigolds to help with pollination, to help to draw the bees,” explained Leonard.

This veteran gardener was able to share one simple piece of advice for beginners.

“Be patient. trial and error,” says Leonard.
