Discovery Park of America hosts groundbreaking for new Greenhouses on Ag Day
UNION CITY, TENN (WNBJ)-
Today (3-22) is National Ag Day and discovery park of America held an event to celebrate. During their ag day celebration Discovery Park of America broke ground on the Farm Credit Mid-America Education Pavilion and greenhouses.
Discovery Park of American President and CEO Scott Williams said, "Obviously when you do a groundbreaking, you oftentimes just have a shovel and a hard hat. Well, in this case, we thought it would be much more appropriate, especially since it's ag day if we planted seeds instead of just breaking the ground.”
Students from the region that excel in agriculture organizations like FFA or 4-H were chosen to plant the seeds
Taylor Cantrell a senior at Dyer county high school was one of those students selected, "I'm just so excited for this opportunity, not only for myself, but also for all of these future generations of farmers that are coming up.”
She went on to say, "I've loved the discovery park since it first got built, so I was super excited to see that they were incorporating agriculture more. And I was even more excited to be able to be a part of it."
The new greenhouses will go right next to the Simmons Bank Ag Center at Discovery Park of America.
"One will be a working greenhouse that our grounds crew will use to grow the plants and the flowers that you see on the property. And then we'll also have an education greenhouse that classes will used to come and learn more about horticulture but also pollinators and the role of the things that they plant to the rest of the earth,” Williams said.
The green houses will service the American, Japanese, and European gardens at discovery park.
The new buildings will also be equipped with audio visual technology to enhance education.
I think it's super cool for kids to be able to learn about it at an early age. And the discovery park does a great job of making these exhibits fun and interactive and super educational," said Cantrell.
The green houses are set to be open by the end of the year.
