Commissioners Cup Media Day: Three Highschool football teams rushing to be the "Best in the City"
JACKSON, TENN (WNBJ)-
The first games of the high school football season begin kickoff this Friday in West Tennessee- today the Commissioner's Cup held a media day to preview this year's cup.
Highschoolers will always debate which public school has the best football team in Jackson, the Commissioner’s Cup has been answering that question every year since it began in 2018.
Northside won the cup the first three years- 2018, 19, and 20
"It's like a championship, so I'm proud. Proud of everybody, proud of you guys, your team," said Marcus Parsons who is a senior at Northside.
Southside currently holds the cup after winning last year.
“When we finally won, the feeling just feels so unreal; it’s like it was a dream,” said Southside Senior Nicholas Powell.
Liberty Tech is looking to win the cup for the first time this year.
“It would mean a lot to us and to me too," Liberty Tech Senior Devon Nappiersmith said.
Jackson-Central Merry will be joining the Commissioner's Cup next season.
This year Northside, Southside and Liberty are looking to take home the trophy.
“We’re going in with one mission; that mission is to win…I dream about it, I talk about it all the time,” Powell said.
“We just want to make a statement for everybody because they think we are just a soft team. [that] we don’t want to work hard, we put the work in, so we [are] just gonna show it," Nappiersmith said.
Parson's said, “We have an attitude about it, we think it should be ours. We’re gonna come out and play as hard as we can.”
The winner of the cup is determined by the games Liberty, Northside and Southside play against each other.
The Commissioner's Cup is all about friendly competition.
“Everybody knows everybody, we’re all friends outside of football so it's bragging rights; who’s the best in the city?,” Parsons said.
All three teams are rushing to get the season and the cup underway.
