Agencies encourage the public to prepare for emergency situations during National Preparedness Month
JACKSON, TN (WNBJ) - National Preparedness Month (NPM) is every September to spread awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time.
The American Red Cross is one agency that is deployed in the event of natural disasters like the flooding in Waverly and the wildfires in California.
They say having an emergency kit or plan can be the difference between life and death.
“The American Red Cross encourages folks to build an emergency kit and the list is really simple of what you need. Like a gallon of water per person, per day, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a battery-powered radio so you can stay in contact with the news. A first aid kit, medications, supplies for infants and pets, and a multi-purpose tool along with personal hygiene items,” said Sherri McKinney, the Regional Communications Director at the Red Cross.
You can also purchase an American Red Cross emergency kit online at their website.
Triple-A wants to also encourage the public to make sure you are keeping up with proper vehicle maintenance.
“So, if it’s been a while since you’ve had an inspection done on your vehicle if it’s been a while since you’ve had an oil change, go ahead and get those things taken care of especially this month while it's top of mind, preparing for whatever that can be happening on the roadways,” said Megan Cooper, TN Public and Government Relations Consultant with AAA - The Auto Club Group.
