A number of parents across the area are choosing the virtual option for their children to learn this year many parents and recent college graduates have formed tutoring groups to help children stay on track through the changes.

Over 7,000 parents opted in for their child to do virtual learning or cyber school in Jackson Madison County.

While learning from home is a big change for most students it is also a change for the parents.

“The curriculum is so different from what we learned when we were in school", says one tutor, Jasmine Washington.

Now, a few community members are stepping up to help students and parents who may need extra help during this school year.

Washington adds, “but if I can assist a parent that doesn’t have those tools to be able to give to their child to have a better life and have a better education you know that’s what I am all about.”

“It takes a village to raise a child and i was like that is really how its going to have to be. It’s got to be churches, it’s got to be community organizations, it’s got to be everybody to educate the kids", says tutor Aliyah Collins.

Both tutors say they plan on bringing relatable material into the tutoring sessions to help children feel more comfortable with learning in a pandemic.

“Just as much as we are going through these changes, so are these kids. I want to make it as fun as possible learning fun, so i definitely wanted to incorporate some things that different individual kids like", says Washington.

“Zoom, sharing my screen, power points, things like that and really introducing them to materials that they can relate to", adds Collins.
