Madison County has it's first confirmed COVID-19 case

March 24, 2020

The Jackson Madison County Regional Health Department confirmed it's first case of

COVID-19 here in Madison County, but city and county officials do not want residents to panic.

“We received notification of our first positive COVID-19 case in Madison county", says Regional director for the Jackson Madison County Regional Health Department, Kim Tedford.

The Health Department announced that the patient is a 23-year old female.

She traveled alone to Miami, Florida and returned feeling sick.

“I don’t think this changes anything for the general public. For the general public your risks are low. Just continue to do social distancing and all the instructions that we have given previously.", adds Tedford.

The patient became feverish on March 21st and went to the hospital on March 22nd. She was seen and tested that same day. This all took place at the Jackson Madison County General Hospital emergency department.

Hospital officials say that they are doing what they can to make sure the virus does not spread within the building.

“So we look at all the employees that may have been exposed to the patient but we also look at whether the patient and our employees were wearing personal protective equipment at the time", says Communications officer for West Tennessee Healthcare, Amy Garner.

The patient is currently self quarantining and the epidemiologist for the health department is talking with her to trace who she has come in contact with.

The Health Department encourages anyone who has questions on symptoms they may have to contact their healthcare provider. In Jackson, for 39 News, I’m Imani Williams.
