Incoming freshman ready to start college after UTM SOAR

Incoming freshman at the University of Tennessee at Martin are ready to become Skyhawks after a day at UTM's SOAR or summer orientation and registration program.

“I'm looking forward to meeting a lot of people especially coming from another state and a different environment,” says incoming freshman Haeleigh Paulino.

Students and their parents spent the day on campus, getting acclimated to life in college.

After today the incoming freshman should have everything they need, and everything they need to know to start the school year.

The sessions included registering for classes, student services and organizations, and even things to prepare them for life in college like time management and budgeting.

Things that UTM says are necessary for students to come in with when they start the school year.

“It's where we take care of everything a student needs to do except for moving into the residence hall and buying their book,” says director of admissions Destin Tucker.

And the students weren't the only ones with an action packed day.

Parents also went through workshops and sessions as they get ready to leave their kids for the school year.

“It's been an emotional day here i'm very proud of her and glad she chose UTM,” says parent Melissa Cobb.

After more than a thousand incoming students participated in SOAR, the school says they're on track to increasing their freshman class this year.
